Windows Vista VPN Configuration

Go to your Control Panel and open the Network and Sharing Center

Select "Set up a connection or network" from the sidebar

Select "Connect to a workplace" from the dialog and click next
If you have an existing VPN connection, Windows will ask if you want to re-use it, select "No, create a new connection" and click next

Select "Connect to a workplace" from the dialog

Enter the hostname of the desired server (e.g.
sanantonio.wonderproxy.com
) and a name for the destination (e.g. WonderProxy - San Antonio) then select "Don't connect now; just set it up so I can connect later" and click next -
Enter your WonderProxy username and proxy token, select "Remember this password", make sure the "Domain" field is empty then click next

Windows will say the connection is ready to use but it isn't so click "Close" instead of "Connect Now"

From the Network and Sharing Center click "Manage network connections"

Your new VPN connection should be listed as disconnected. Right click on it and select "Properties"

Select the "Security" tab, then select the "Advanced" radio button and click the "Settings" button

Switch the combo box at the top to "Require encryption", then select the radio button for "Allow these protocols" and ensure that only "Unencrypted password (PAP)" is selected. Although your proxy token is not encrypted it is being sent over an encrypted channel and is safe from eavesdropping. Click "OK".

Select the "Networking" tab, switch the "Type of VPN" to "L2TP IPsec VPN", then click "IPsec Settings..."

Select the radio button for "Use preshared key for authentication" and enter the shared secret: (you must be logged in as a proxy user to view the shared secret) then click OK.

Click OK again to return to the list of network connections. At this point you should be able to connect to the VPN successfully.
